Alice and Simon met in Belgium in 1939 when they were children. Their families are Jewish. Alice’s family hid in Simon’s home for 2 weeks while they planned to escape the area. Alice’s family fled on a journey that eventually led them to the United States. Simon’s family stayed hidden for 18 months before being captured by the Nazis. On the train ride to Auschwitz, Simon’s mother pushed him toward the door and told him to jump. He escaped safely and never knew what happened to his friend Alice.
Fast forward….Alice’s nephew recently found Simon’s memoir online, which mentions her family. They just reunited, 76 years later.
