Teacher Carries Disabled Student For Field Trip Hike

A Chicago charter school takes their 4th graders on a 2-night camping trip every year. Special education teacher and co-founder of the school, Helma Wardinaar, didn’t want her student Maggie to miss out because she has cerebral palsy and couldn’t take her walker or wheelchair on the hike, so she CARRIED Maggie on her back in a carrier. Helma said it was hard work and she was sore, but “a hot shower does wonders.”
