Elton John still has "hope" after losing sight completely in one of his eyes.

The legendary musician, 78, got candid when discussing his deteriorating eyesight in a new cover story with Variety that published on Tuesday (November 25). The "Rocket Man" singer revealed last year that he lost sight in his right eye and was losing vision in his left after contracting an eye infection while vacationing in France that summer, per People.

"It's been devastating," he said. "Because I lost my right eye and my left eye's not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven't been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything."

Despite the challenges, he still has hope and recognizes that he has "had the most incredible life."

"I've just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one. Once they help me with this one, I'll be fine," he said, adding, "You mustn't give up hope, you must be stoic, you must be strong and you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things."

John admitted that his medical struggles "get me down sometimes" but that "you just have to grin and bear it," a feat made easier thanks to the gratitude he feels for still being able to play and sing music as well as the support he has from his friends and family, including husband David Furnish and their two sons, Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12.

The "Your Song" hitmaker revealed his vision loss in a health update on Good Morning America in December 2024, explaining that he was "taking an initiative to try and get it better." He even cracked some jokes about his eyesight at the Golden Globes earlier this year, proving that his sense of humor is still intact.
