'Tis the season to give, and Utah is definitely showcasing that.

According to the World Giving Index, the United States is the most generous country, and has been for the last ten years.

Wallethub recently released a list of the most charitable states in the nation and Utah came in at the top spot.

Utah had a total score of 72.27.

The state ranked number one in the following categories:

  • highest volunteer rate
  • highest percentage of donated items
  • highest percentage of time donated
  • highest percentage of population that donated money

Utah was second in volunteering and service.

Rounding out the top five spots were Minnesota in second, Maryland in third, Oregon in fourth, and Ohio in fifth.

According to the list, Arizona was the least charitable state. New Mexico came in at number 49, and Louisiana came in at number 48.

To determine the list, Wallethub compared the 50 states across two key dimensions, "volunteering and service" and "charitable giving."

Those dimensions were then evaluated using 19 key metrics, including volunteer rate, share of population that does favors for neighbors, share of income donated, public charities per capita, and share of sheltered homeless.
