After losing her job, Lashenda Williams found herself homeless and sleeping in her car. She regularly parked outside of a Kroger in Nashville.
“I would lean my seat all the way back so no one would see me because I knew I wasn’t supposed to be there.”
Lashenda’s fate changed when she met Jackie Vandal, who oversees the hiring at the store. Jackie told her about an upcoming job fair. On the day of the job fair, Jackie helped Lashenda fill out the job application online, then hired her on the spot.
After eight months on the job, Williams had earned enough money to move into her own one-bedroom apartment, which her new co-workers helped her set up and furnish.
“For the very first time in my life, now I know what love is," she said tearfully. "Now I know what friendship is."
