A baby girl who developed a life-threatening brain condition had a successful brain surgery…..in utero
The baby's condition was noticed during a routine ultrasound at 30 weeks. A vein had connected with an artery in the brain, which can result in brain damage, heart problems, and breathing difficulties after birth, and can be fatal.
A doctor at Boston Children's Hospital who treats babies with this condition AFTER they’re born, decided to try to surgically repair the issue before birth…which meant performing brain surgery in utero at 34 weeks.
The baby girl was born healthy a couple of days later. She is now seven weeks old and thriving and there's no indication that she needs any additional treatment.
